Bean Burger

I haven’t made this one for quite a while and certainly missed its taste. This burger is quite a cheater. You just may believe you are eating a real beef burger. The recipe is simple and preparation doesn’t take a lot of time. It’s a nice alternative to meat burgers and one of the first veggie burgers I ever tried. The original recipe calls for black beans but since I couldn’t find those easilly I used red beans instead and it tastes just great.

Ingredients:

  • 420 gr canned red beans
  • 1 red pepper
  • 1 small onion
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili flakes
  • a handful of fresh parsley
  • 1 teaspoon hot chili sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin
  • 3 cloves of garlic
  • 1/2 cup bread crumbs
  • salt to taste

Preparation:

Wash and drain the beans well. Put them in a food processor and mix. Transfer into a bowl. Do the same with pepper, onion, galic and parsley. Be careful while mixing though. You don’t want to mash it all completely, you want to get small pieces of onion, pepper and beans. If you don’t want to risk mashing it all up you can always chop all ingrediends with a knife and then smash the beans with a fork. Add spices, egg and breadcrumbs. Apparently you can adjust the amount of breadcrumbs depending on the consistency of your mixture. Sometimes you may need to add more breadcrumbs to make it all stick together but for me half a cup usually works fine. Then combine all ingredients with your hand. Form medium size burgers and fry on both sides for a couple of minutes. Right before they are ready you can place a slice of cheese on top and let it melt. Serve with your favourite burger components. From this amount of ingredients you should get six reasonably big burgers.
